I’m still trying to make sense of some of it since it’s still a tricky topic, but I’m getting there. Some of the quotes that I resonated with were the things that helped me with my dissertation breakthroughs. It was a breakthrough I ended up needing and lead me down a really helpful path in terms of analysis of the idea of two parallel worlds that overlap in certain ways.

I wasn’t expecting that, but I was overjoyed by being able to connect my favourite author to my favourite band in some way. This book also kind of came in handy for my dissertation writing.

“My provisional theme here: On a day-to-day basis I use writing to work out who I am.” You can create an entire other world that seems real but can easily slip away from you in a moment.

You put your heart and soul into something that isn’t always fully tangible and that can be one of the most frustrating things. But also like Sumire, there was a point when that stopped and I found it so challenging to write. There was a point in my life where I had to write every single day like Sumire did. I think a lot of writers would agree that when you’re so passionately devoted to writing it can sometimes be the thing that you’re most afraid to do. In many ways, I thought that Sumire’s relationship with writing was similar to my own. It’s the forced rose tinted glasses that make it such a romantic novel. There’s something about getting to know a character through the eyes of someone that loves them that makes the experience so much more special. I want to be back in Sumire’s world and experiencing her character through the eyes of a young man who was so enamoured with her. The more I think about my experiences reading the book, the more I want to go back and re-read it all over again. Part of me wanted the book to be longer, but part of me loves that it’s on the shorter side. With Murakami, I knew I’d get some magical realism, but it wasn’t nearly as obscure as some of his other stories. Sumire is just the kind of person I had romanticised myself to be when I was in high school. I picked up this book because I was in the mood for something that was a little more on the dark academia side and I’m glad I did.

Sputnik Sweetheart is a beautifully written exploration of language, love, and the search for desire. I will preface this review by saying that I have loved every Haruki Murakami story that I have ever read, but I think Sputnik Sweetheart has replaced Kafka on the Shore as my favourite of Murakami’s novels.
